BaselLogoNew technologies, new startups and recently new crowd-funding platforms for art-based projects was launched.

In last September, Art Basel, one of the most prestigious art fairs in the worlds, announced its Art Basel Crowd-funding Initiative, a partnership with Kickstarter to support nonprofit art organizations. The new platform will allow these art organizations, which struggle constantly for funding, to launch projects and raise money for these projects, while exposing them to a bigger audience from around the world. The projects will be chosen by a jury based on pre-set criteria (review the selection criteria).

Marc Spiegler, director of Art Basel, said to the New York Times that the idea is to create a bridge between worthy projects and Art Basel’s expansive network of supporters.
“Often the first chance an artist will get will be with a nonprofit,” Mr. Spiegler said. “If you look at the kind of art world that Art Basel wants to exist in 10 or 20 years down the road, and needs to exist for its galleries and other artists to be in a strong position, these people are key parts of the equation.”

In its January update, Art Basel announced the raising of 231,000USD that in turn successfully funded 10 art projects. These include  4A Center for Contemporary Asian Art in Sydney, to support an art project by the Yangjiang Group of China; Gasworks in London, to build two new studios for emerging artists; and Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound, to stage a series of free public concerts in Los Angeles.

This is a great opportunity to support our future culture and to help these young artists and nonprofit organizations to flourish. Access the Art Basel page on Kickstarter here or watch the projects below.
