New Media & Art in Education

by | Apr 23, 2015

As you probably have noticed 🙂 art and entrepreneurship are close subjects to my heart. Besides being involved in Young Entrepreneurs Israel (a member of Junior Achievement), which educates young teenagers for entrepreneurship, I have been involved in Petach Tikva Museum of Art.

Petach Tikva Museum of Art is one of the leading art museums in Israel with international recognition. The museum’s manager and chief curator Drorit Gur Arie and her staff are big believers in art education for the young. Therefore, last year we initiated the first New Media & Art in Education project.

Together with AMAL High School, we launched the project “My Petach Tikva” in which young students at the ages of 15-16 created meaningful stories about people and places in the city of Petach Tikva (for the project YouTube channel press here). The students were given the opportunity to bring to life their perspective of the city based on artistic themes and methods and using up-to-date technologies such as iPads and free off-the-shelf applications. The students filmed, directed, edited, and published the materials and created short segments based on what they had learned.

The program’s aim was to integrate journalism with art criticism and to create a true collaboration between art and education. The students had the opportunity to get to know their community better, to express their creative minds, and to get exposed to the world of video art.

Arik Bornstein, AMAL’s program manager said, “When it comes to education I believe in doing things differently and challenging the young students. We chose art because art has an intellectual impact and it helps to stimulate innovative and creative thinking. Bringing artistic philosophy to the journalism world is something that will benefit the students in the future.”
